🍂 1. Nebo Loop Scenic Byway
Distance: ~38 miles round trip
Access: From Payson or Nephi
Just minutes from Salem, the Nebo Loop Scenic Byway is one of Utah’s crown jewels in the fall. It climbs from Payson Canyon to the 9,000-foot Nebo Bench, with sweeping views of Mount Nebo, colorful aspens, and alpine meadows.
Stop at Devil’s Kitchen, a mini–Bryce Canyon of red rock spires, or pull off at one of the scenic overlooks for a picnic.
Best time to go: Late September through mid-October for peak color.
🌲 2. Spanish Fork Canyon (U.S. 6 to Soldier Summit)
Distance: ~56 miles round trip
Head east on Highway 6 from Spanish Fork and follow the canyon toward Soldier Summit. The drive winds along the river and through groves of oak, maple, and aspen.
You’ll find several turnouts for photos — especially around Thistle Creek and Diamond Fork.
Pro tip: Hit this route in the morning for the best lighting and less traffic.
🏔️ 3. Alpine Loop Scenic Byway
Distance: ~45 miles one way
Access: American Fork Canyon to Provo Canyon
A little farther north, the Alpine Loop is worth every minute. You’ll drive beneath towering peaks, pass Timpanogos Cave, and weave through thick forests of fiery maples.
Stop at Cascade Springs for a short boardwalk hike with clear mountain water and postcard-worthy fall views.
Tip: There’s a small recreation fee — bring a card or cash.
🚘 4. Mapleton Canyon to Hobble Creek
Distance: ~20 miles round trip
For a shorter, local favorite, try Mapleton Canyon Road over to Hobble Creek. It’s a peaceful, lesser-known route full of fall color, ranch scenery, and crisp canyon air.
You’ll see plenty of places to pull over for photos or to let the kids skip rocks in the creek.
Perfect for: A quick weekend drive close to home.
🌄 5. Provo Canyon to Sundance and Aspen Grove
Distance: ~40 miles round trip
Follow Highway 189 through Provo Canyon and turn up toward Sundance Resort. The drive offers jaw-dropping mountain vistas, waterfalls, and fall foliage that looks straight out of a painting.
Grab lunch or hot cocoa at Sundance before heading back through Vivian Park or continue up to Aspen Grove for a short scenic hike.
Bonus: You’ll pass Bridal Veil Falls, a must-see in autumn.
🧰 Before You Go: Quick Fall Vehicle Check
Utah’s canyons are beautiful — but they’re steep, winding, and often remote. Before your next drive, make sure to:
-
Check tire tread and pressure (cold weather drops PSI fast)
-
Top off coolant and washer fluid
-
Test brakes, lights, and wipers
-
Have your battery tested if it’s over 3 years old
At Tried and True Auto in Salem, we offer quick fall inspections so you can focus on the views — not the “what-ifs.”
